Tennis Racket Backhand Stroke Tips

The choice of using a backhand or forehand stroke usually is a preference. For this article, I am going to explain the backhand tennis stroke, along with the typical grips, stances, and proper swing motion. The stroke, grip, and stance is slightly different for single handed players and double handed players.

Stance
First I will start off with the stance. A double handed player will typically use a neutral closed stance but you can also use a partially open stance for wide balls which can help you recover. A player with a single hand stroke typically has the right foot stepped forward with a closed stance. A lot of professionals will choose a neutral stance with a single handed stroke. Again the choice is yours and your coach should help you decide what’s best for your style of game.

Racket Grip
The next stroke movement to discuss is the grip. With the double handed grip typically you would grab the tennis racket with your right hand in a partial Western or Eastern forehand grip. Then you take the left dominant hand and meet with the right hand. Make sure the hands are even and close together so that the coordination is at its best.

A single hander has the rear of the hand facing the sky when you grip the racket. Top spins are easier to hit when the hand is turned counter clockwise but don't go too far.

Racket Swinging
The third stroke movement that should be discussed is the actual swing motion. With a one handed swing, the tennis racket and ball should come in contact with the elbow bent at a comfortable position. Make sure you don't over bend or under bend it. During the backswing, the elbow is bent and progressively straightens once the racket strikes the ball. The arm typically extends and follows through to a straight arm.

A double handed swing has a slightly different swing motion with the right elbow bent more than the single hand stroke. For more experienced players, they will usually pay attention to the wrist movement also.
