While looking for jobs, we might send our resumes to a lot of companies or job agencies in order to increase our chance of employability. Interviews will then be pouring in until we forgot how many we went to and this will not be a cause for concern to you as the more you go, the better it is. The greatest headache is after that when the job offers comes in, you will have to seriously think which one suits you and how to reject those that are not suitable. A lot of people think that it is easy to reject a job simply by coming up with an excuse but they do not know that if done inappropriately, they are actually burning their own bridges. Here are some tips for you to reject your job offer gracefully and politely. A) Be Truthful Do not and never lied to another company for they can sense and know it in due time. Once they know, you might be blacklisted by the company or job agency. By doing this, you are actually narrowing your job market in the near future. Always remember reject it gracefully and end in a good terms so that in future you can approach them again. B) Be Firm Be firm if you want to reject the job offer. Never give an impression to the prospective company that you are holding up for a better offer and also never give them false hope that you might joined them later. No company likes to be fooled and played around with. If you are not interested, just be firm and tell them even they come back with a better offer. C) Be Graceful And Grateful Always be graceful and grateful that the company actually chosen to offer you a job out of so many candidates. Thank them and be apologetic to them for not able to accept the offer. Never accept it and become missing on the starting day of the work. The common mistake people commit is that they become missing in action or avoiding the calls from the prospective employers. There is nothing to hide if you tell them the truth. D) Be Tactful Be tactful to them for they have done nothing wrong. There are people who will scold or harsh to the caller. No matter how many times they tried to reach you, just reveal to them that you are not interested in the job in a tactful manner. Below are some sample reasons you can use to reject a job: 1. The Big Picture Just say that although the job offer offered by them is attractive but after thinking through thoroughly, the job doesn’t really suit your long term plan and goals. Sincerely tell them that it is not nice of you to accept the job offer now and to quit after few months of work to search for one that really aligned to your long term plans. This won’t be fair to them as you do not want to treat this job as a temporary stop-gap solution. Most of the company will be accommodating and understanding after you tell them this and they might even wish you well for your future pursue. 2. The Family Card Tell them that after much discussion with your family members, although the job offer is attractive but it is not the best time for you to make a job switch at current juncture. 3. Counter-Offer from Current Company Reveal that your current company got wind of your intention of a career switch and that they have counter offered you an attractive package and give you greater responsibilities. Make sure this do happens and do not lie to them. 4. Accepted Another Job Reveal that you had actually found your desired job and this job will be a good fit for your skills, knowledge, personality and you have been searching for this kind of job for sometime. 5. Location Concerns Reveal to them that after much consideration, you feel that the location is a concern to you and state your preference of location. Use this when only the location is really not within your area of preference and again do not lie to them. 6. Unsuitable Jobscope You tell them that you do not have the necessary expertise and knowledge as listed in the job and might not be able to cope with it well. It is better for your company to find someone who is more qualified and suitable for this position. 7. Referrals Tell them that you have some friends who are also looking for job and that their skills, knowledge and personality are far more suitable than myself for this job and that you will refer them to the company.
