Going as far back as I can remember these 2 foods generally surprise friends and family when I point out they should consider eliminating these foods from their diet.

The first type of food that is time and again mistakingly thought to be healthy for you is wheat products... these usually include most pastas, cereals, breads, crackers, muffins, bagels and so on. And yes, I am counting "whole wheat" in this grouping of food that will make you chubby.
To embark on, a huge percentage of the western world are unable to consume any amount of gluten which is found in wheat and some other grains. The most prone to gluten is clearly celiacs. Now most of the population don't relize, the human digestive system was never meant to eat large portions of wheat.
For approximately 2000 years since wheat was presented into the human diet, it's only been the last 100 years that it has been consumed in excessively large quantities. So the length of time we as a human race have been consuming wheat products compared to the length of time we have spent evolving, the digestive system which was developed over several hundred thousand years devoring a hunter-gathered of fruits, meats, nuts, seeds, vegetables our digestive system still hasn't fully adjusted to coping with wheat products in the amounts we as a population are consuming.
From my own trial and error over many years, I have found that when I removed wheat from my diet for a period of around 2 weeks testing to see if it had any benefit in losing some weight, my conclusion was that it had an effect. When compared to other "pre-seasons" I had completed where my diet included wheat products that the extra body fat I had put, I was able to eliminate this "off-season" body fat alot faster. Some added benefits that were noticeable for me included certain skin complaints that I suffered from were gone and I wasn't suffering from indigestion anymore.
The 2nd example of the most awful foods that will astonish you because just about everyone would believe that this is healthy for you is -- fruit juice.
Please don't misunderstand what I am trying to convey, I'm not an anti-carb crusader as such... Personally, I believe that most fruits are in fact very beneficial for us However, the fruit was never meant to be separated from the juice and consumed only as a high calorie sugary drink and leave behind the vital fiber and other valuable ingredients of the fruit.
When you only consume the juice of fruits, you are not getting the appetite satisfying benefits of the fiber in the actual fruit, this will leave you hankering for more carbs. Eating the whole fruit itself will slow the response down that your blood sugar levels will have compare it to actually only having the juice. This gives it a lower GI rating as opposed to a higher GI or spiking of your blood sugar levels.
At the end of the day... if you consume to much fruit juice it will contribute to adding unwanted fat. Alternatively, consuming whole fruits that includes all of the fiber helps you keep a healthy balanced diet and high nutrient density. This is obviously only the case if the rest of your diet doesn't include unprocessed foods as well.
