The Alaskan Difference: Clean And Sustainable Seafood All Around

Within the last few years, more and more people have come to the realization that eating seafood can make a huge difference in their health. Full of rich omega-3 fatty acids, seafood, particularly fish such as salmon and mackerel, strengthens the cardiovascular system, boosts the immune system and may even contribute to a longer, fuller life. Similarly, just as people have become more aware about what a vital role seafood can play in terms of health, they are becoming increasingly aware about the consequences of their seafood choices on the world’s ecosystems. Given the rising demand for seafood, consumers are now conscious that sustainable seafood is the way to go.

The earth’s oceans are limited in what they can produce. There is no such thing as an endless supply of fish and seafood. In fact, as many people are now finding out, many of the world’s fisheries are being depleted due to unsustainable fishing practices. It has now come to light that an alarming number of companies in the business of exporting fishery products don’t follow any set regulations, and thus destroy the harvests that make them so profitable. However, Alaska is leading the way in seafood sustainability.

Alaska’s fisheries have gone to great lengths to assure the continued success of their fisheries by promoting sustainability and environmentally friendly practices above all else. In fact, stewardship of the state’s natural resources is written in the constitution. The state government has made sure that companies exporting fishery products from Alaska follow strict guidelines. They enforce measures of traceability and accountability. Scientists work in cooperation with fisheries and exporting companies to ensure the utmost care for the environment and for the state’s marine life.

A smart quota system, careful resource management under the guidance of scientists, strict controls, and the positive outcomes resulting there from have made Alaska a paradigm for all other seafood exporting areas.

Alaska’s whole hearted commitment to sustainability means that there is hope for the world’s oceans. If others follow suit, issues such as depletion, over fishing and bycatch may well be things of the past. Choosing Alaskan seafood, consumers can rest assured that they are making the right choice for the environment and for themselves.
