The Amsterdam Red Light District - Exciting Stuff To See And Do
The Red Light District is one of the most unique attractions in Amsterdam. No other city has prostitution so clearly out on display, and in such a laid back way.
Even so, this part of Amsterdam is just as safe as the rest of the city. The crowds of people are a mix of tourists, local folks just passing through, some Christians on a mission of salvation and even a few customers for the prostitutes. It is not actually the wild party zone you might expect. The area is busiest at night, with the biggest crowds on the weekends.
The Window Brothels
The Red Light District is named for the many red lit window displays, where scantily dressed young women sit and entice customers for their services. When a man sees a girl he likes, he just knocks on the door and they decide on a price.
Once agreed, they go into the small room behind the window. After they complete their business, she returns to her window showcase and looks for the next customer.
Peep Shows and Sex Theater
If you're not looking to actually hire a prostitute, there are many other racy things to see in the Red Light District. The Casa Rosso has live sex on stage, and the Bananenbar offers a unique show with women and bananas. The "Golden Fleece" condom shop is the place to do some adult-only shopping. These are just a few examples of the various types of sex shows and shops you can find.
Some Safety Rules
Though the Red Light District isn't particularly dangerous or unsafe, there are a few things you should be aware of when visiting the area.
Don't take any photos of prostitutes. Should anyone see you taking pictures, you'll likely get an earful of insults. They may even grab your camera from you. Regardless of what you think of the business, be respectful.
Pickpockets can be a problem since pedestrians are so focused on the red window displays, they may not notice someone bumping into them. Keep your valuables safe when you walk through the district.
Watch for drugs. Though soft drugs like marijuana or has are legal, all other drugs are prohibited. Drug pushers on the street should be ignored.
Other Things to See
Believe it or not, there is actually quite a bit more to see besides the sex industry in the Red Light District. It happens to be one of the older parts of the city, and has many historic sites. There is amazing architecture, museums and many fine cafes and restaurants. Ironically, several old churches are also in this neighborhood.
And because many regular people happen to live there, there can be many different types of shops and businesses in between the window brothels that are not related to the sex trade at all.
Take A Tour
Because it is a famous part of Amsterdam, tour companies have guided walking tours that can take you through the neighborhood so you can see all the sights. These can be helpful for any tourist that wants to see the Red Light District but is a bit uncomfortable walking around on their own. The Prostitution Information Center (PIC) is staffed by former sex workers, and they can provide tours and information for the tourist.
