The Atlanta Opera 2011-12 Season
The season begins with the poignant opera Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti. The production is scheduled for November 12-20. The opera is based on the novel Bride of Lammermoor by Sir Walter Scott. It is the tragic story of a young woman who is forced by her family to marry against her will. The results are an unfortunate series of events that lead to madness. The role of Lucia will be sung by coloratura soprano Georgia Jarman, and the part of Edgardo will be sung by tenor Jonathan Boyd. The Atlanta Opera will present The Golden Ticket from March 3-11, 2012. This comic opera is based on the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. The opera was commissioned by the American Lyric Theater and premiered in 2010. Atlanta audiences will be seeing this opera for the first time. In this story a young boy finds a golden ticket that admits him to a tour of a chocolate factory, where he meets the strange proprietor, Willy Wonka. The opera’s theme focuses on wishes that come true. The role of Willy Wonka will be sung by bass baritone Daniel Okulitch. The final production of the 2011-12 season will be Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni, scheduled for April 28 through May 6, 2012.
