The Atlas Model Railroad Story

The story of Atlas Model Trains is one of imagination, entrepreneurship, and hard work mixed with a passion for the model railroad hobby.

And as a result, the size at which the company grew, was significantly bigger than anyone had initially thought.

The business originally started back in the early 1900's, having nothing to do with model railways ...it was a tool company.

The founder, Stephan Schaffan Snr was so under-staffed, that he got his son, Stepahn Schaffan Jr to come and assist him with the organization.

As the story goes, the paycheck Stephan Schaffan Jr was earning from his fathers business was inadequate to keep him happy.

He had a very enterprising and resourceful mind and was extremely proficient with mechanics. After work, he would head home and use his recreation time building model aircraft.

He would regularly call in on a local model airplane shop which happened to be near by.

In order to find a way to earn a better paycheck and follow his interests, he would constantly ask the owner of the shop for part-time work, but the owner turned him down.

Ultimately the store owner got so tired of being pestered by Stephans constant nagging, he gave him some old model trains which he wasn't using anymore ... in the anticipation that Stephan would leave him alone.

As fate would have it, these old model locomotives and track, which were so easily given away, would in due course become what is known as Atlas Model Trains.

Stephan Jnr went to work on those old trains and being very enterprising and resourceful, he designed a switch set which allowed the user to stop and start a train by controlling the electrical current to the tracks.

Switch sets ultimately became a big part of Atlas.

Stephan Jnr went on to invent many more model railroad products.

In the end, the model railway side of the company dwarfed the initial tool division and the company's name was changed to Atlas Model Railroad ... well-known by most people as Atlas Model Trains.

Now, Stephan Jnr could focus on inventing other time saving technology for model railway enthusiasts.

Atlas went on to become one of the leading names in the model train industry and today Stephan Jnrs legacy continues to assist model railway enthusiasts
