The Basics Of Lawn Care

A well maintained and beautiful lawn is the pride of house owners. If you care for your lawn very well, your lawn will be elegant and attractive to the visitors. There are some basic things to be followed, so that your grass is kept healthy. Mowing, watering, feeding, removing unwanted elements and aerating are the important steps to be followed scrupulously, in the process of caring for the lawn.

Important Steps to be Followed in Caring the Lawn

While mowing your lawn, you should not cut more than one third of the present height of the standing grass blades. Keep the grass clippings collected in this process safely in the yard as they can be used as fertiliser at a later stage. Mowing the lawn must be done at least once in a week. The blades of the mower should always be kept sharp and you should not mow in the same direction. Further, when the lawn is wet, mowing is not advised, since this will result in clumps of clippings and breeding of bacteria. You have to use either a “walking mower” or “ride on mower”, depending upon small or large lawn.

Watering the lawn is an important thing, to keep them healthy. The watering should be done in the early morning. Watering need not be done frequently. See that there is enough soaking facility. You have to refer to the weather forecast and, if there is possible rain, you need not water the lawn.

Lawn feeding is one of the important aspects of caring the lawn. Before feeding, you should test the soil and find what nutrient is missing from the structure of the soil, and then feed accordingly. There are separate fertilisers for each season. Fertilisers, mixed with fine sand, ammonium and iron sulphate are available and if you apply this composition, it will prevent the growth of weeds and moss.

Aerator is small equipment which is used to aerate the lawn and this process will pull out plugs of dirt and build a better root system for the grass. Aerator is a good investment for the care of your yard and aeration help the grass to remain healthy.

Scarifying is the process of removing the dead plants and unwanted elements from your grass lawn. When compared to a rake, a scarifying equipment will do a neat job, in completely removing all unnecessary elements, on the lawn. Scarifying, if done in autumn, will yield better results as the soil will be moist and warm.
