The Benefits Of Black Tea And Why You Should Drink It Now!

Black tea has been with us for hundreds of years. Wars have been fought over it and it has been one of the best commodities to trade in. But what exactly is black tea?

Well, it started out as green tea! It comes from the plant camillia sinensis. Black tea was actually an accident waiting to happen. In the 1800s in the days of China trade where the British purchased tons of green tea to ship to Britain, the tea often arrived moldy or damaged as the trip could take up to two years! You see the green leaves will wither and tarnish if they are not dried quickly after harvesting. Chlorophyll (which produces the green color) breaks down and tannins in the tea are emitted. This is what is called fermentation nowadays. The process is halted by heating and the tea is then dried. Fermented (black) tea travels well and keeps for ages. This explains why a nation at the other end of the Earth became 'addicted' to tea which was grown in China!

I grew up in Britain where everyone I knew drank tea constantly, usually adding milk, if not sugar. I still prefere milk in my tea! A cup of this delicious brew was fit for all ailments, sudden tragedies, a welcoming drink and comfort. As soon as anyone walked over the threshold they were offered a cup. Therefore, there is a lot of emotional wellness surrounding tea whereas coffee is more praised for its stimulating effect.

However, lots of studies have been made about black tea. Claims have been made that it is good for cancer prevention, where it can slow down the growth of cancer cells without affecting the trillions of healthy cells in the body. It can also normalize blood pressure and also blood glucose activity and therefore be good for people suffering from diabetes. It also has antioxidant qualities which can prevent damage cuased by free radicals in the body which can be responsible for disease.

Tea also helps expand arteries which, of course, increases blood flow to the heart, helping reduce not only the risk of heart attacks but also strokes. So tea for heart health is the way to go.

Another great benefit is that it help you to burn fat as well as increase metabolism. This is why many people consider it a great drink to have when on a diet. Also, it may help make you look younger and if you look at the ingredient list of many anti aging products, you will find tea extracts on the list.

As you can see, there are many benefits of black tea. Diluting the drink with milk or sugar could lessen the effects, but then sugar is not recommended in any drinks! Enjoy your cuppa, knowing it's mostly doing your body good!
