The Best Of James Cameron

Most people go to the movies to check out their favorite actors: Leo, Brad, and Tom all draw legions of fans, not to mention their female counterparts. Each of these actors has occasional misses, however, resulting in films that just don’t pan out. A better barometer of a movie’s potential success is the man behind the camera, rather than in front of it. If you use that as your gauge, you’ll immediately be drawn to the films of one James Cameron.

Everything this man touches turns to absolute gold, and actors jockey to appear in his movies, knowing that an Oscar probably won’t trail far behind. Even more amazingly, he doesn’t stop at directing; these films are all created from screenplays written by Mr. Cameron. The following covers virtually every one of Cameron’s main features; unlike some other directors in Hollywood, he doesn’t bother making movies every year for financial gain. Instead, he limits himself to films that will actually move an audience, rather than move the figures at the box office.

Terminator 1 and 2: Perhaps the two best science fiction movies ever made, the Terminators defy
explanation. These movies are so well-made, so powerful that you can’t easily pigeonhole them into a certain genre. Let’s just say that Arnold Schwarzenegger wouldn’t be governor of California if not for James Cameron. Perhaps even more to his credit, Cameron knew not to touch Terminator 3 with a ten foot pole. Make sure to catch these films in high definition, arguably an even better experience than most originally had at a movie theater.

Aliens: Building off the success of the first Terminator, Cameron created Aliens, the sequel to the original Alien. The actors on the set were actually upset with the selection of Cameron as actor, even refusing to view Terminator when he attempted to show them the film as evidence of his skill. They probably changed their tune after the film garnered seven Academy Award nominations.

Titanic: This is probably the most epic undertaking of the 1990s, and only one man could have put it together: James Cameron. Preparations for filming included the building of a scale model of the ship itself. Perhaps that explains the price tag that came with the film: over 200 million dollars. Of course, that number pales in comparison to the eventual box office proceeds of over 1.8 billion dollars worldwide. This film won 11 Oscars in 1998, tying the record.

In recent years, Cameron has devoted his talents to documentaries, rather than the Silver Screen. Most of these movies take place under the sea, keeping with the theme from Titanic. Cameron also leads the film industry in embracing the 3D format. In a few years, it’s entirely possible that 3D will take the place of HD as the new kid on the block. Some of these movies are available on satellite TV if you take the time to look. If not, consider ordering them from an online source. They’re highly educational, and worth the time and money.
