The Cat Door: A Good Idea?

A cat door is often installed in a home with a cat. This type of door for one's feline friend is also called a cat flap. The purpose of a cat door is to let a cat inside and outside whenever it wants. These doors have been improved greatly from the time they were invented. They are framed with resistant plastic or wood. The doors will, of course, resist any wear caused by the cat going through them. These are important points when buying or considering different cat doors.
Size And Frame
Always take the breed and size of your cat in consideration when buying a cat flap. Some breeds, like the maine coon cat, are larger than average and others are small enough that they lack the strength to push a heavy door. The frame that accommodates the door for the cat should be made of strong material in order to last several years and withstand outside factors such as prying and banging.
Some cat doors are built in glass while others are installed through walls. Obviously, the size and material of the door should be comfortable to the cat's size and strength.
Electronic or Magnet-based
These doors were designed to work in coordination with the cat. Some doors can detect the approach of the cat through the electronic collar that it's wearing. This means that the cat wearing the collar will be the only cat that can go inside or outside the house. This is very beneficial if the cat’s being chased by dogs or by other cats. The disadvantage to this is that if the "key" gets lost, the pet is left out on its own until such time that its owner wonders where it could be. Other doors open when a sensor senses the presence of a cat. Since the features of each cat door vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model, it pays to find specific information about them before making a purchasing decision.
