The Character Solitaire From Live And Let Die

James Bond initial encounters Solitaire while being interrogated by Mr Big in Live And Let Die, the second of the James Bond books. Originating from Haiti, she was introduced to voodoo while a child and possessed psychic powers.

Actually her only reason for being there during the interrogation is to tell Mr Big whether James Bond is being truthful or not. As well as sensing whether people are telling the truth, she can also see into the future, and only joins forces with 007 because she senses that he will be her rescuer.

Solitaire's real name turns out to be Simone Latrelle, having been named "Solitaire" in Haiti because she avoided the sleeping with the locals. When Bond gets back to his New York hotel he is surprised to receive a message from him the girl; they travel down to St Petersburg together by train, narrowly avoiding being machine gunned in their cabin.

In the film the character was played by Jane Seymour and although the big screen version was radically different from the original plot - the plots of most of the Roger Moore era films were quite different from the James Bond books - Solitaire remained quite close to the original. However, the reason for her avoiding men was underlined; she would lose her psychic gift unless she remained a virgin, something that was not even hinted at in the book. From that point on she must fake her powers in front of Mr Big.

While in the book she doesn't sleep with Bond, although it seems likely she will at the end of the book when they are on leave together, the film was quite different. From that point on she must fake her powers in front of Mr Big, who, since he is only employing her because she is psychic, would kill her if he found out.

The truth is she is tricked by Bond. She picks The Lovers from the pack of Tarot cards he offers her. The audience can see clearly that every card in the pack is the same.
