The Crisis Of Time Wasting

Our world has many problems: political instability, poverty, and environmental change just to name a few. But what we rarely think of, but is tragic nonetheless, is the unnecessary bureaucratic waste that affects all of us. And I do use the word tragic specifically and deliberately.

Have you ever felt, when filling out a form or application for example, that it was a waste of your time? I'm willing to bet that there is almost no one who can answer "No" to that question. And our minutes on this earth are limited and ultimately, priceless. Therefore when you engage in an effort that does nothing at all to add to your (or anyone else's for that matter) quality of life, and is in this case something pointless and meaningless, you are squandering precious and miraculous moments of your life. And this waste can be measured in many billions or even trillions of squandered hours every year.

But what is it exactly then that we are talking about here? There is the labor issue and the problem of hyper-consumption but what I'm mainly referring to is the abuse and overuse of forms, applications, and registrations, be it in paper form or on the Internet. The concept of "streamlining" seems to be utterly alien to the designers of fill-in forms, and just as there are gluttons for food, these folks behind our forms are gluttons for information. And they are clever, too. I have an auto-fill function on my browser but it's blocked so often that I never use it anymore. This list goes on and on and is far too bloated for the space here.

I recently moved and, of course, now have a new address. I have lived at my new address for just over a month now but I'm sure I've had to write down this address more than thirty times so far, averaging over one address writing per day. Why do so many people need to know my address? Do I even have to have an address? If there is no privacy anyway why don?t we just implant a little chip in our containing all our relative data? Just scan me and spare me the time.
