The Critic’s Critic

Bloggers can be a bit sensitive when it comes to writing. Writing is the thing we love doing most in the world and we want it to be the best. When faced with criticisms of our work, there are times when we may have contemplated turning our backs on it, right?

But if you wish to make your mark in the world of blogging, then you got to develop a tough skin and learn to deal with it. Criticism is a part and parcel of the joy of blog writing. An important skill that a blogger needs to master is learning how to handle criticism in an effective manner.

A thing to keep in mind is your opinions are not the same as compared to the rest. If this indeed were to be the case, it would be a very boring world! So how does a blogger cope with a certain amount of negative attention that comes his way?

In the first place, don’t take every negative comment to heart. You need to be prepared to accept that not everyone is going to like what you write. Some may not even be partial to your style of writing. Don’t take it literally. Remember, sticks and stones may break your bones but words can never hurt you!

Many a times it happens that differences arise between the blogger and his reader because of a simple misunderstanding or rather misreading. By blowing your fuse, you are not helping anyone, least of all yourself. So, it is very advisable to think twice (and read twice) before you react. Perhaps, you may end up scaring away a loyal and perceptive reader of your work.

Then again, you are always bound to get your share of small minded people who, let’s be frank, are not interested in making an intelligent contribution to the discussion. These people are only looking for an outlet to unleash their pent up frustration and will use your blog to spew abuse at someone. A smart blogger will avoid getting entangled with them or the situation can turn nasty.

The main thing however, is that a blogger must know how to take on criticism in a constructive manner. For every cloud, there is a silver lining. Similarly, use every negative situation as means to learn more and improve yourself. Ultimately you, the blogger, will be the better for it.

So, next time someone comments in a negative fashion on your blog, don’t get mad or even. Instead, take a deep breath, step back, evenly assess the criticism and make the best of it.
