The Cruel Speech Impediment Known As Stuttering

Do you or does somebody you know have a stutter? Are you searching the internet for potential stuttering therapies that could potentially help you to eradicate the problem? I am a person who stuttered throughout my childhood and teenage years. I finally managed to kill off all my stuttering demon voices at the age of twenty-two and I am more than pleased to report that fully fifteen years later I am still able to enjoy total fluency.

Stuttering is one of those impediments that is rarely understood – apart from by the people who actually have the problem – and even these people find the situation some what difficult to fully comprehend. As an example these were the things that I often could not understand when I had a stutter:

1. How come I talk totally fluently when I am on my own but then find it difficult when I am with other people?
2. How come I do not stutter when I sing?
3. How come the speech therapists have absolutely no idea as to how to help me?

The one thing that probably frustrated me more than the rest was point number three on the above list. The speech and language therapist, the so called specialists who were supposed to be there to help me just seemed to have no understanding of the problem of stuttering. They looked at me as if I was some type of freak when I would start to talk to them about the voices in my head – voices that would attempt to convince me (usually successfully) that I would stutter on the next word or that I would stutter at some future event.

One thing soon became quite clear these speech therapists were unable to help me – I had to help myself. At age 22 this is exactly what I did and the results now speak for themselves – sorry about the pun!
