The Darker Side Of Homeschooling
You will have the sole responsibility of teaching your child. As a parent you will have to make sure that your child has the same. or better, educational skills that are expected from other children in the same age group. If not, you will not have done your job as an educator a parent. One part of homeschooling that is critical is time that you must spend with your child. Your social life will surely suffer because of the time you must dedicate to your child. This will become frustrating at times for you. You have to learn to wait for the rewards that will come with patience and enthusiasm. A parent who tutors his or her child does not have much time for a career. This will mean that the family does not have an additional source of income. This may lead to stress over finances and you will have to live on a strictly managed budget. While this is only a matter of habit, you will take time to get used to it. You cannot have a break when you feel like it. If you neglect studies just because you are feeling depressed you wall have a feeling of guilt, and your child may take advantage of the situation. Even when you have set homework, you may have to help with it. This will mean that any time your child is around you, you are working, in your mind, every waking hour. Children studying at home will need to get out more. Because of staying at home all the time, Interaction with adults and with other children will need special attention. A child tutored at home does not develop in various directions as children who attend public schools. To achieve that kind of exposure, you will either have to be a super-parent who is skilled at everything, or you will have to enrol your child to various activities. This may be counter productive or be too cosily. Home schooled children sometimes do not do as well in SAT tests as many public schooled students. Not having a diploma or a GED, some home schooled students may find it difficult to get into the military later. Lastly, if you decide to enrol your child in a public school later, there will probably be a certain period of emotional and social adjustment. A child who is used to being at home for the whole day and enjoying the unrestrained freedom will usually have to undergo some emotional changes before getting used to the regular school life.
