The Different Types Of Freight Car

When it comes to transporting goods, equipment, or any other form of cargo across the country, companies have a choice between road freight transport and rail freight transport. Of course, there is also the option of air freight transport, but this prohibitively expensive in all but the most exceptional cases, especially when companies are only contemplating transport within the country. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of freight transport, and one argument is that road freight is more flexible than rail freight in that trucks are able to drive straight to any destination whereas trains are limited to unloading from the freight car at the closest available train station, whereupon goods still have to transported by road to their final destination.

On the other hand, rail freight can also be more flexible than road freight when looked at from another perspective, and that is from the perspective of the variety of different cargo that can be transported. Road freight is limited to whatever cargo can be placed inside the cargo area of a freight truck. Rail freight, on the other hand, is able to handle a much more diverse array of cargo, ranging from small items to large pieces of equipment that could never be transported by a freight truck. A farming tractor, for example, would never fit inside a freight truck, yet can be easily carried on a flatcar pulled by a train. In fact, trains offer a number of different types of freight car that are each suitable for different types of cargo.

The flatcar already mentioned is the best option when it comes to oversized cargo, such as farming tractors or the cranes commonly used in the construction industry. In fact, many companies in the construction industry and other industries that require the use and transportation of heavy equipment often make use of rail freight services to transport such equipment.

Traditional boxcars offer the best option for transporting smaller items in bulk. A shipment of ten thousand boxes of stationery, for example, is best transported in a traditional boxcar.

Heavy-duty trains also pull wagons that are used to transport ore, sand, cement and other heavy but difficult-to-transport materials. Such cargo is almost always transported by rail, as doing so by road is an extremely inefficient proposition.

The most common method of transport used on trains today, however, is containerization. Cargo is loaded into containers, and these containers are subsequently loaded onto flatcars. In some cases, the containers are even double-stacked in order to maximize the amount of cargo carried by the train. This form of transport is particularly convenient for companies that intend to ship their cargo overseas because the containers can be unloaded at the port and then transferred directly to a ship without even having to be opened.

With so many different types of freight car available, rail freight transport really is more flexible in some respects than road freight transport, and the decision to use one or the other must depend on the type of cargo that you need to transport.
