The Environment And Your Health
Haiti, a poor country, which was struck by catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake on January 12, is also fighting against the effects of the disaster to Haitian’s health. Immediately after the quake, there was no safe drinking water in almost every place. People have no choice but spend nights in crowded streets along with corpses. There was no place for human waste. Port Au Prince, in an instant became the best place for diseases to thrive. People need medical attention but hospitals were devastated as well, and help was limited although men and women in scrubs uniforms flooded in. Other countries, on the other hand, are dealing with El Niño, a weather condition as a result of unusual rise of temperature. It drains the soil of water, leaving lands literally dry and crops dead. This phenomenon also often causes wild fire and illnesses coined to severe heat. At the end of the day, it is the people who will suffer. And the even sadder fact is that the climate is definitely going hotter according to expert meteorologists. On March 10-12, 2010, Prama, Italy will have t he Fifth Ministerial Meeting on Environment and Health. It will address children’s health problems due to changing environment. It is aimed to protect health through safe water and adequate sanitation; ensure safety from injuries and better health from adequate physical activity; improve respiratory health through clean indoor and outdoor air; and safeguard health from chemicals and through strong labor standards. The whole of Europe will tackle emerging environmental health challenges. As for other countries, may they get some ideas from the conference, and use them to address their own problems.
