Romantic symbols using the rose have been important throughout history. As symbols of love and marriage, roses are often given to celebrate Valentine's Day. According to legend Cleopatra used rose oil to seduce Mark Anthony. The Romans and East Indians used roses as decorations for weddings and funerals. It was believed that if you scattered the petals at banquets it would prevent drunkenness. In medieval periods the shields of warriors were often decorated with roses. They were frequently used for religious rituals and as an integral part of meditation rituals.
