The Five Top Things You Need To Take With You To College

Going away to school can be a great deal of fun. Many students have recently begun their college experience and some are looking forward to beginning in the Spring and perhaps even next fall. It is an exciting time but one that comes with a long list of things to do and sometimes during this time frame both students and their parents become distracted with making sure that they get all kinds of new goodies for their students to take with them that they sometimes overlook some of the most important things that every college student should take with them away to school.

1. Health Insurance. It may appear silly but if you have a student who is covered under your health insurance coverage then you need to make sure that you get in touch with your health insurance business and make sure that your student will receive the same benefits at school as they do in your home town. Moreover, you will want to ask your health insurance company to send you another id card, which your student should have with them all the time.

2. Photographs From Home. Pictures can really help your student deal with homesickness. Be sure not to weigh them down with a ton of pictures, instead put some on a computer disc or create a collage of some important people that they can hang up on the wall and look at frequently.

3. A Credit Or Debit Card. Now while it may not be a good idea to give them access to your accounts it is an excellent idea to open a student account for them that offers e-mail alerts. This way you will be notified every time they draw money out of that account, you can keep some money in it just in case, and then you can always transfer more into it in case of emergency.

4. A Phone. Many students do already have their own cell phones. If your soon to be college freshman doesn't have their own cell phone you need to make certain that you get them one. Even if it is only a prepaid phone they require a way to call for help and to keep in touch with you. It is your best communication with your college student and you can design it for e-mail alerts to let you know when they have a low balance.

5. Access to the Internet. No college student can survive without the internet these days and therefore it is important to make sure that they not only take with them a laptop or notebook but that they have internet access as well. Many colleges have wireless internet throughout but if your student needs internet access you may be able to set up their cell phone to access the internet for them and function as a wireless hot spot.

In addition to the splendid decorations and bedding and linens that your college student will require to make their dorm room feel like home, they will also have a few other critical needs as well. It is important that you make sure that your student has everything they need to make their college encounter both successful and secure.
