The Great Lawrence Taylor - Historical Perspective
He didn't play any organized football until he was a junior in high school. He played defensive lineman at UNC Chapel Hill when he first enrolled in college. He was later shifted to linebacker. With a rare combination of size and speed, Taylor, 6 feet 3 and weighing 240 pounds, excelled as a linebacker. In 1980 he was named an All American. He was the second pick in the NFL draft by the NY Giants in 1981. Lawrence Taylor has been called a lot of things, but many call him the best defensive player in NFL history. He earned the nickname LT during his playing days. He played a ferocious brand of lights out football with no regard for his safety on the field. Taylor had two other bothers and his parents were Clarence and Iris Taylor. He was born in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was an All-America at North Carolina. He was the first-round draft pick of the New York Giants. He was the second player selected overall in the 1981 NFL Draft. When LT played with the New York Giants he led them to two Super Bowls and spent his entire career with the team. When the NFL celebrated their 75th anniversary, they selected the top players in history to be on the team. LT was honored as one of these players. In 1981 he was named Rookie of the Year. In 1986 we was named Most Valuable Player of the NFL. He was also named a Defensive Player of the Year three times. In 1999 he was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in an emotional ceremony. This was the first year that he was eligible. Again, Taylor played his entire professional career as a linebacker for the New York Giants in the National Football League. He won several defensive awards after his rookie season. He had over 10 sacks each year from 1994 to 1990. Sacks are usually the measuring stick for players at his position.
