The Half Cent - Rare U.s. Coin Investment Grade

Introduction

The U.S. Government minted the Half Cent periodically between 1793 and 1857. Whilst this unusual denomination may seem worthless today, it was a important part of the U.S. monetary system historically when working class wages were $1 per 10-hour work day.

Liberty Cap

Minting of the Liberty Cap half cent series spanned the period 1794 to 1797. Every single date and sub-type in this series is scarce and pretty valuable, at least to the tune of a few hundred dollars for a basic circulated example. But this short series also contains no less than FOUR five-figure rarities. As a type, the Liberty Cap half cent is far scarcer than its bigger sibling, the Liberty Cap large cent.

Draped Burst

During that period, the United States Mint was striking silver coins, but the Government was making enough quantities to meet demand. The American public still loved using Spanish and Spanish-Colonial silver. It was the Spanish-Colonial silver coins (struck in such places as Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, etc.) that inspired the need for a half cent. Consider this: goods in the U.S were often priced in Spanish measurements. So while something priced at “two bits” (two reales) was the equivalent of twenty-five U.S. cents, something priced at “one bit” (one reale) would have to be paid for in the equivalent of 12 and ˝ cents.

Braided Hair

The obverse of the Braided Hair design was updated by giving Liberty a slimmer, more youthful appearance. Minor design edits continued through 1843. The 1843 design prevailed through the end of mintage in 1857.

Conclusion

United States rare coins are in demand throughout the world. The prestige of American contemporary, historical and rare coins amount to an asset class that is considered a less speculative and volatile investment compared to other asset sectors, such as stocks and bonds. Rare U.S. coins have also proven to outperform bullion and are less subject to wild price swings. The Half Cent is an ideal addition to your rare coin holdings.
