The Handiest Marketing Tools

Some advertising literature just works better than others. Of course, now that the internet has become almost universal, online marketing techniques have become much more common. But some of the more traditional (or old fashioned, if you prefer) can still be quite effective. Let’s take a look at some of these old stand-bys.

One quick note: Use color, if at all possible. Color adds so much to your materials, it is not even open to discussion.

Brochures
These little wonders can still do the trick. If your next color printing project is a brochure, remember to keep it simple. Brochures work best when they have just one or two messages to deliver, and they deliver them quickly and clearly. Do not try to get cute.

Business Cards
Everyone has a business card. If you are like me, you probably have 7 or 8 of them tucked away in your wallet. But in order to make your business card noticeable (and not buried in someone’s wallet) you have to design it correctly. Do not just print up a plain, rectangular, black and white business card. Get creative and images. And consider including something on the back of your cards, as well.

Flyers/Posters
Here is another old fashioned marketing tool that can still bring a few more customers to your door. As with your brochures, however, you want to keep them relatively simple. Try not to get overly complicated when you design a flyer or poster. Decide what message you are trying to convey, and do so quickly. Customers will not stick around and look at your poster long enough to decipher a difficult message.

Door Hangers
You can save on postage costs by using door hangers as a marketing tool. These nifty little things are designed to hang on a customer’s doorknob. You can still add a great deal of information to them, and then distribute them to target customers in your area. The downside, of course, is that you have to physically go door to door to deliver door hangers, or pay someone else to do it.

Postcards
If you would rather send out your literature, rather than deliver it in person, postcards may be the tool for you. Postcards are wonderful because they usually get read by the people you send them to. Your readers do not have to open an envelope to see what is inside; they simply look at the card as they pull it out of the mailbox. For that reason, postcards are often more effective than many of their counterparts. Of course, you have to include something that will grab the customer’s attention in a hurry. Just because they look at your postcard does not mean that they are going to be affected by it.
