The Hearing Center Blues

There are many things in life that no one should be late for, including work, the airport, or a best friend's wedding. It would also behoove anyone who is in serious need of an occupation to not be late for the interview. Almost anyone in this situation would do everything in his power to make it on time. Procrastination, however, can make this desire impossible.

Imagine if you've been having trouble hearing out of your left ear. One of your friends told you about the hearing center downtown, but you kept putting off your visit. You decided that your right ear was good enough for the time being. Your friend, however, thought it would be a good idea to go before your job interview, that way you could clearly hear everything your potential future boss was saying.

"No, that won't be necessary," you said. "My right ear is just fine. Besides, I don't really feel like spending all of my money at a hearing center."

Your friend let out a loud sigh.

"Well, I hope you're right," they said. "Good luck on your interview Tuesday."

Days passed and it was finally the day of your job interview. You woke up extra early due to your nervousness and excitement. After running a few errands, you decided to take a much-needed nap. You set your clock so you'd be sure not to be late for the appointment with your potential future boss.

Hours later, you woke up and looked at the clock. You were an hour late for your interview. Baffled, you wondered what the problem could be until you picked up the clock to sit it on the other side of you to check if the volume had been tampered with. Then, you noticed that you could hear the alarm loud and clear. You hung your head in disbelief as you realized you missed your important appointment because you weren't able to hear the clock out of your left ear.

Embarrassed and ashamed, you called the interviewee to apologize and let them know about your predicament.

"Well, I'm sorry sir, but we thought you weren't interested, so we scratched your name off of our list," said the receptionist. "You would have been the last interview and I believe they are in the process of narrowing down the top prospects right now. I'm really sorry."

You hung up the phone as you tried to hold back tears. That was the closest thing you had to a job opportunity in weeks. Now, it was gone. You then thought about what your friend said about the hearing center downtown. So, you went online to find the location and made it your mission to finally go.

All of the trouble could have been prevented, if you would have heeded your friend's advice and went to get your ear checked out. The hearing center would have provided you with a great deal of help and assistance. It's important to beat procrastination before it beats you.
