The city of Milton Keynes was established in 1967 and is one of the largest new cities of the UK. It is also one of the fastest growing urban areas at present. The people of the city really like it, because it is a suburb. Unlike the other towns, Milton Keynes also has privately funded developments.

Milton Keynes is an exceptional city in the UK for taking short breaks and holidays. It is also the up coming area of the country in terms of buying property. Although, Milton Keynes is a relatively new city in the UK, it is a cultural as well as historical heaven.

One of the best and most charming things about Milton Keynes is the way the modern day culture is blended with the deep-rooted history. The city has a diverse history, which is represented with the museums, theatre, architecture, sculpture, and art evident in the city.

The history of Milton Keynes dates back to the time long before England existed. The area was actually at the bottom of primeval sea. The archaeological excavations carried out in the city have revealed that there were several burial sites that dating from 2000 BC to 1500 BC. The area that later on became Milton Keynes was relatively rich in minerals and precious metals. The largest hoard of Bronze Age jewellery ever found in Britain was discovered in this area.

During the time when Britain was under the Roman control, the Catuvellauni tribe was the controller of the area. This control was practiced from the tribe’s fort at Danes borough. It was during the Roman regime that the area, which is now Milton Keynes, thrived. During the excavations, many things were discovered that showed signs of links to the Romano-English.

Milton Keynes is the city that has always been at the centre of all happenings and shows good signs of it too. The Romans were the ones who built the initial roads and villas in the city. Milton Keynes was close to the boundary that separated the Anglo-Saxon and Viking kingdoms.

The churches built by the Normans in the medieval times and can still be seen in the city. The Plantagenet and Tudor Kings have visited the local forests of Milton Keynes for hunting. The battles fought during the civil war also occurred in this area, which was where some of the railway lines and canals ran. The first major motorway also passed through the old Milton Keynes area.

The Milton Keynes Museum was built in 1847 on a land, which was actually owned by the Radcliffe Trust. The selection of the new city grid road system for Milton Keynes was done in 1970. It was in 1971 that the first major housing scheme for the city started. In 1975, the first office building in Central Milton Keynes was opened. Over the period of years, the city has developed greatly and it can all be seen in the landmarks.
