The History Of Chair Lifts

The stairlift story is short. It is estimated that in nearly 1920, the first stairlift design was fashioned by a businessman from Pennsylvania - C.C Crispin. Crispin's need for a stair lift was due to the illness of his colleague who could not move from floor-to-floor within his house. He named his conception 'The Inclin-ator'. Recently discussed however, by historians a's Dr. David Starkey, is that the first stairlift was created as far back as 1536.

It was at this time the Ruler of England, Henry VIII suffered a nasty fall whilst jousting and needed a solution to assist him within his homes at Hampton Court, Greenwhich and Whitehall. To do this, it is said a block and tackle system was used by servants to lift the monarch's mass. This would have been similar to those used on the Mary Rose, the king's warship.

It was in the 1930?s that Stairlifts became common appliances. They were principally used for the casualties of Polio paralysis. In 1974,the 'Stannah' was introduced by the popular British company of the same name. 'Stannah' Stairlifts were known as the most advanced reliable stairlift designs and have come along way given that the king's crane systems. Since the 1970?s, the designs and machinery behind Stairlifts have improved dramatically. There is much larger choice and flexibility for any stairlift user.
