The Importance Of Grandparents

The relationship between grandparents and grandchildren is a special one, so as a parent, it is important to take the time to cultivate the bond and to let your children experience their grandparents. Make sure that you spend time introducing your kids to their grandparents, allowing the relationship to grow.

Also, allow the grandparents to spoil your children rotten if they want – it won't harm your child. One of the most important facets of the grandparent and grandchild relationship is the ability and tendency to spoil the child, which reflects love. You have your own house rules, and the kids know it.

The world has certainly changed, with all sorts of new technology to make relationships easier. You can use this technology to help your kids stay in touch with their grandparents, regardless of where the grandparents live. Older people today are more active and adventurous than they have ever been, so it can be hard to keep in touch when you have grandparents with a busy lifestyle. Using technology, however, opens up new avenues of communication, such as:

•E-mail – you can show your children how to email their grandparents and, if necessary, teach the grandparents how to respond to your children. Using email technology is a great way to stay in touch and teach your kids important lessons about written communication.

•Webcam or digital camera – you can use a webcam or a digital camera to keep the grandparents in the loop when it comes to what the kids look like and how they are doing. For even better results, have the grandparents get a webcam or digital camera of their own and take pictures back and forth or have webcam chats.

•Phone calls – with cell phones and pagers, you can have your children place calls to their grandparents regardless of where they are. Teaching your kids how to use cell phones or pagers is important, especially for emergency situations, and having that extra line of communication open between grandparent and grandchild is special.

Along with using technology to keep the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren working wonderfully, you can rely on other measures. Try scheduling special times in which the grandparents can visit the grandchildren, and offer entire visits so that your children can spend valuable one-on-one time with their grandparents. If the grandparents are capable, this may include sleepovers or visits to one another's homes.

Grandparents often want to spoil children by purchasing gifts. Try to keep the grandparents informed as to what the children like and dislike and give grandparents the opportunity to get something valuable and long lasting. Furniture for the kids, toys, a toy box and fun clothes are always great gift ideas for kids of any ages. Keep the grandparents updated with news of what the latest trends are and what your kids are into for extra fun.

As a parent, take the reigns of the relationship between your parents and your children and allow the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren to flourish. Keep your parents in the loop when it comes to your kids, allow them to spend time together with your children, and allow them to spoil your children. Cultivating all of the important dynamics of the grandparent and grandchild relationship is one of life's special memories.
