The Importance Of Borders And Edgings In Your Front Yards

When it comes to home gardens and playgrounds, it is not enough that beauty dominates the general appearance of the area but functionality should also be carefully planned.

When it comes to safety, the children’s playground needs the most precautions—this is where innocent children play and have fun. This fun could easily turn into tragedy if the playground is not kept safe; hence, there are playground borders.

There are many types of borders and among the popular choices are the safety sock; hard borders that are made of timber; plastic barrier; and the weed barrier. Plastic barriers often appear like timber and just like all playground borders; they have joints for easy installation. Since it is made of plastic, it is more durable than regular wood and is also weather and rust-resistant. Soft safety sock borders are borders that are filled with wood chips. It is very soft and can be blown around the perimeter.

Landscape edging, on the other hand, simply means a border that defines the garden or a landscape. The simplest kind of landscape edging is a shallow trench that is placed at the edge of the lawn. This type requires periodic re-cutting, though, so it is best to settle for the ones that require less maintenance. Edgings have many functions, among them: keeping the weed out of the garden area, containing the mulch in plant beds, and they can also serve as mowing strips.

With its many functions, landscape edging materials should be carefully chosen. Common materials include wood (for a more natural finish); metal (gives a commercial look for your garden); plastic (which could also be made to appear like wood); and stone (brick or concrete for a more formal appearance).

Raised gardens are in definite need of borders. Many gardeners fall in love with this idea because of its many advantages. With a raised garden, soil is less compacted; plants can be closely spaced because there is no need to put in spaces where you need to stand on; excess water is easily drained so there is zero chance that more than enough moisture is received by the plants; soil condition is more controlled; and easier fertilizer application. Studies have also proven that raised gardens produce 200% more flowers and vegetables. This is good news for those who would like to make a business out of gardening.

Looking at all these advantages, it is easy to conclude that bordering and edgings do create better-looking and more functional gardens. These are great ideas that even the first-time gardener should seriously consider.
