The Importance Of Learning Through Play

Under the new government, the ‘nappy curriculum’ that includes children hitting 69 targets by the age of five could be scrapped. The scheme has been heavily criticised for its emphasis on bringing a test culture into nursery schools. Research shows that there could be links between anti-social or unruly behaviour in young children and the pressures of a test culture. The Coalition government is reviewing the option of making the curriculum voluntary, allowing nurseries to opt-out of the now compulsory scheme.

The review is being undertaken by Action for Children after claims that the target driven learning is in fact preventing toddlers from developing naturally. Learning through play has always been considered the happiest and healthiest way for children to develop. Using children’s tents, role play and games allows toddlers to confidently express themselves and helps them develop emotionally – something that many childcare experts feel is crucial. Reports of anti-social behaviour in toddlers have been blamed on the fact they simply don’t have the emotional maturity yet to cope with the pressures and sense of failure a test culture can propagate. Children under five currently have 69 targets that include literacy, problem solving, using modern technology and understanding different cultures.

Some nurseries have protested against the scheme, concerned about a ‘tick box’ culture rather than allowing children to develop individually and in their own time. Martin Bradley, chair of the Montessori Schools Association told the Telegraph newspaper: “The early years are now more regulated than any other area of the education system. This review is long overdue.”

As well as being a bureaucratic headache for educators, the scheme is thought to push children too far at a too young age – undermining the time spent playing. The Association of Teachers and Lecturers said they had experienced a rise in tantrums and anti-social behaviour, stressing that active learning and development through play was a more natural and healthier approach to a toddler’s education.
