The Importance Of Shopping Around And Knowing Your Stuff
Life insurance ensures that your family is financially taken care of. Failure to arrange life insurance cover is likely to have a major impact on your family in the event of your death. And especially during the current economic crisis, where more couples have had no choice but to live with their parents, it is only essential to purchase life insurance otherwise your family could end up struggling with the mortgage, bills and other expenses and could face losing their home. Knowing your stuff According to recent research by Barclays, 20 per cent, (one in five) of Brits are unaware of how much their life should be insured for while 73 per cent are unaware of how much they are covered for. Insurers have advised that it is worth seeking advice before purchasing cover to ensure that you have adequate protection. David Stuart, advisor and products director of Barclays said: "When you buy a protection policy this should not be the end of the matter. It is crucial that people think about updating any cover, or switching to different types of products if, for instance, they have a child, get married or buy a house. It's a worrying statistic that over 10 million people could have the wrong cover when they think they are protected. Perhaps part of the problem is that people aren't often fully aware of what need and what sum their protection products cover in the first place, especially when they buy without advice." Life insurance at its cheapest Despite the downturn of the UK economy, now would be the best time to purchase life insurance if you haven’t already. According to recent research by an independent broker, the cost of life insurance is currently at its cheapest ever. Lifesearch found that the cost of life insurance has plunged by 30 per cent over the past decade. However, those who are classified as being obese or have a high-risk occupation may not be able to benefit from the price cuts as they would usually need to pay higher premiums, according to the Dailymail.com. Matt Morris of Lifesearch said: “The old loading for obesity meant premiums jumped by up to 20 per cent. That is more like 50 per cent today and can in some cases be more. People are being loaded earlier and loaded higher.” Customers should shop around However, customers are advised to shop around to get the best deals. Morris added, “No single insurer will be cheapest for everyone. Those who have a high BMI or complicated medical problems should shop around for the best cover.' More people would usually opt for the cheapest cover yet previously, many insurers have warned that the cheapest option isn’t always the most appropriate. Customers should shop around for the cheapest deal for adequate life insurance and ensure that the policy meets their requirements.
