The Increasing Complexity Of Printing Machines

Printing essentially means to impress words or pictures onto paper. It is often considered to be one of the most important inventions of all time, as it allowed for easy mass communication and took away the high cost of education and learning. In the olden days relatively large scale printing was done by craving on wooden blocks and then with use of ink these blocks pressed into the paper.

Another important type of printing that arrived later is ordinary treadle printing, in which letters are made of small type arranged in a small frame and the frame is fixed to an ordinary style machine. Ink is pasted into a fabric rod which will pass through the frame and it will mark the paper. The main disadvantage of this type is time; we can only print up to a maximum of 1000 sheets in an hour, and the clarity of the print is also not up to the mark.

Then came yet another type of printing called offset printing which fixed these disadvantages- in offset the material is designed on a computer and then it will be copied to a plate and then fixed into the machine. We can print as many as 5000-10000 sheets an hour, sometimes more. The clarity of the printing will also be very good. The machine is easily washable and kept neat. We can also print as many as 4-7 colors at the same time, with color mixing and blending performed on the computer. In a seven color machine the labels of medicines and liquor can easily be printed. Different printers are needed for different applications.

Nowadays due to the emergence of very high quality computers and advanced plotting technology there are many types of printing, and each performs a different duty with different levels of quality, speed, clarity, accuracy and affordability. For example, some of these are flex printers, used for making large billboard prints. There are also many other types of printing such as screen printing in which mostly visiting cards and wedding cards are printed.

Using a computer printer we can make our own prints in many colors, but this type of printing is a little bit expensive because the print cartridges are expensive. There are many type of computer printers such as LaserJet printers which use a laser to print, and inkjet printers are cheaper to buy but more costly to run.
