The Issues Surrounding Hr
This is short sighted in the extreme, but it occurs on a regular basis. Whereas the sales department is able to fight to retain staff members on the premise that they will try to find new customers, or look for opportunities to increase orders from existing customers, HR can’t show that they are able to make savings or increase profitability and may be thought of as expendable. If there is a head of the sales department they can speak with directors to ask them for an increased budget, so that they can arrange for a promotion to advertise specific offers. HR can’t compete on those terms. Although they are constantly aware of the savings which need to be made, they aren’t able to have any direct input. Any HR department worth its weight should arrange to gain an insight into the working of every other department within the firm. If the HR team understand the difficulties and pressure other departments will be under, they may be able to suggest workable solutions, rather than being seen as the “bad boys” of the company, who don’t contribute to the viability of the business. When the HR department are understood to be a valuable cog within an overall wheel and that realising that every department is as important as each other, perhaps there will be an opportunity to co-ordinate thoughts and to make a workable action plan to keep all staff in gainful employment. Once all departments work together as a combined force to ensure the long term sustainability of the business, with every different department understanding the varied problems every other department has then there may be a way for every department to show their worth. All staff members need to know that they are a valuable asset and appreciated by the company for the contribution they make to its profitability whether or not they actually work in the sales department.
