The Legend Of Khathushyamji

The legend on how he became a Shyamji started back during the Mahabharata. As a child, he was already an impressive warrior. He got this ability from his mother and Lord Shiva was very pleased with him. So pleased that he gave him the Teen Baan which is three flawless arrows and a bow given to him by the fire god, Agni Dev, which when used together, will make him triumphant in all the worlds.

The war between the Kauravas and the Pandavas was anticipated by the gods in heaven. Khathushyamji, himself, wanted to watch the famous battle. He assured his mother that in case he felt like joining the battle, he would choose the side that was losing. He went to the battle grounds riding Leela Ghora or the blue horse and took with him the bow and the Teen Baan. The wise Krishna disguised himself as a common Brahmin and blocked the young warrior's path to test his power. He even made fun of him about bringing just three arrows to a great war.

Khathushyamji humbly told him that one arrow was all he needed to eliminate all enemies and then return to its quiver after the task. If he used all the three arrows, there will be chaos not just on earth, but on the heavens and Netherlands, as well! The Brahmin, then, challenged him by tying all the peepal tree's leaves using one of his arrows. He accepted the challenge and released an arrow with his bow. He finished the task within moments but there was a leaf under the Lord's foot. This made the arrow circle his foot.

He then asked Khathushyamji whose side he plans to join and he gave him the same answer. The wise Brahmin knew that the defeat of Kauravas was predictable making the result on their favor. The Brahmin then asked for the warrior's head as charity. This was when he realized that he was not talking to an ordinary Brahmin. He accepted it but requested the Brahmin to show his real identity and he was able to see Lord Krishna!

Khathushyamji wanted to watch the battle until the end which was granted. The Lord put his head on a hilltop where he could witness the entire battle. The head was buried in a place called Khatu. When it was uncovered, it was given to a Brahmin and a temple was built in its honor.

The stories above are just few facts about Khathushyamji that anyone who has interest in Hindu religion, will find useful.
