The Lifeline Of Your Online Business: Copywriting

First and foremost, what is copywriting? Copywriting is the words that we use to express or promote a business, person, an opinion or idea through different media space. It is the words that we use to communicate whatever we do at work, in business or on a social level.

As an online business owner, we have always relied on the power of the internet. Our businesses have been transformed into a global force and because of the power of this medium, we no longer need to meet our prospective customers at the other side of the world. Thanks to copywriting we can communicate with them wherever we are. The words that we use to convey our business message determines whether or not people will be interested in what we have to offer.

Copywriting is used in businesses through all forms of media, from a direct mailer to a brochure to a TV advertisement. It has a major part to play in influencing our thoughts and opinions. It is a powerful skill which everybody needs to learn especially, if you are an online business owner.

If you want to write copy that boosts sales, certain keywords are essential. Keywords are words which are used by searchers in a search engine. That’s why it is important that your headlines contain these keywords which will be picked up by search engines. So, do your keyword research well. Write your headline carefully. After all, it is your headline that has to engage the reader and make sure they read on. A bad headline kills their desire to continue especially if they have a short attention span like many people do. A reader also has only a few moments to read, so whether or not the copy captures their mind, all depends on how you write it. People are intelligent creatures. So always write with respect because your consumers are not morons.

Learning to master the skill of copywriting is a must for those who are in the online business, especially when your business is growing. In fact, your business will depend on it. Below are some of my recommendations by the advertising greats that you may want to read in order to better understand better the art of copywriting.
• Confession of an advertising man. By David Ogilvy
• The Robert Collier Letter Book. By Robert Collier
• My Life in advertising. By Claude Hopkins
• Making ads pay. By John Caples

Copywriting can be a frightening experience - staring at the screen for hours, not knowing what to write or where to begin. That’s why you need to plan before you start writing. What will your headline say? What message do you want to convey? Then proceed to plan the body copy. Do some research and look at some of the sales pages out there. Learn from what has worked before and use that as reference. But do not copy directly what you see. Not only is this unethical, but illegal too.

Always take your time to craft your copy.  Test it from time to time too. If you are not seeing results, keep fine tuning. Your writing will only improve through practice. Try to enjoy the writing process because the skill you are mastering will be incredibly
valuable in the years to come for your online business.

"If you are trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language they use every day, the language in which they think."
