Since time immemorial, music has inspired a lot of things. It has moved people into fighting for peace and has moved others make a stand on certain national issues. One of the things that has consistently been affected by the evolution of music is clothing. Just as there are different genres of music, clothing has also different themes. And just as music has served as a medium for young people to express themselves, clothing, too, has slowly been emerging as a form of expression for the youth’s hatred, love and stand on current issues.
Alternative clothing is the term used to denote the style of clothing that clearly focuses on self-expression and individuality. They are termed “alternative” in the sense that they offer a more relaxed an unique way of dressing up as opposed to the stiff yuppie look. Alternative clothing claims its roots from the punk fashion of 1970’s. Back in those days, punk fashion is equated with rebelliousness and usually comes across as shocking and wild. Punk fashion usually involves torn jeans, offensive clothing and combination of black and loud colors. Some, such as the patches and tight leather jackets, can still among some punk groups of today.
The next decade saw the punk fashion evolve into something wilder but with due consideration to functionality. Hair fashion changed radically as more and more people sported shaved heads as well as hair dyed in the most outrageous colors.
With the taking over of hip-hop genre over the music scene, the fashion statement of the youth also changed. Alternative clothing no longer meant wild and loud colors. Clothing now consists of baggy pants, denim skirts, track suits, large earrings and white classis sneakers. Hair dyed in loud colors seems to have faded away and have been replaced with various hair styles such as corn rows or afro. Girls usually wear their hair back to accentuate their big ear rings. Über big, colorful plastic sunglasses had given way to flashy monotone ones.
