The Many Uses Of Olive Oil

As a product and consumer good Olive oil is an extremely special and versatile for many different uses and preferences. This oil is made from the fruit of the olive tree and this oil is produced globally, but has its highest concentration in the centre of Europe. Spain is the world’s largest producer of this type of oil and has twice as much olive tree than in Italy, who is the second largest oil producer in the whole world.

To produce oil is something that will take a lot of effort and investment as we can see from the next sentences. It takes years to create the perfect oil; firstly you have to wait up too two years until the olive trees begin to actually produce olives. Not until the olive tree is 5 years old it begins to bear fruit that can be taken to the market place. A tree that is 20 years old can bring up to 100 kg of olives every single year. It's not uncommon that the trees become very old, and some trees can actually be around 1500 years old. The world’s largest olive tree is located in Crete, Greece and its age is estimated to be about 2000-3000 years old.

Different olive oils will complement different foods and uses. Olive oil can be used for sautéing, browning, stir-frying, deep frying, as an ingredient in marinades and sauces such as mayonnaise, pesto, or romesco, and as a condiment, drizzled over various dishes.

Of course we know the flaunted advantages of using extra virgin olive oil over standard oil but sometimes there is no need to pay the premium price demanded by this selected oil as standards within the industry dictate an open production process with the consumer being the key beneficiary. When selecting Olive Oil the process can sometimes be similar to that of selecting a wine with many variables such as the region of origin, soil make up and age being just three of many important variables that go towards forming the taste.

Due to its ability to stand extremely high heat olive oil offers the best option for stir frying whilst its lack of acidity will balance a meal or dressing for instance that is high in vinegar.

A lesser known property of Olive Oil is that of its medical strength and seemingly medicinal powers. Already the oil has been credited with halting liver damage, being an effective anti-oxidant, fighting against cancer tumours and effectively managing muscle and rheumatoid pains.

With this knowledge in mind recent tests have taken place to study whether these properties of Olive Oil hold true and whether the liquid is more than just a popular edition to a meal.

We all know to eat more healthily especially as we are coming off a Christmas period where many of us will have over eaten and indulged in gluttony so putting some more olive oil back in our lives will be the kick-start to the traditional January detox. It is clear that Olive Oil can contribute to simply more than just a healthier diet, but a healthier body that will live for longer.

The problem faced in society today in increasing levels of fat in many popular consumer foods and bad fats at that, so how can we combat this problem? One simple easy and tasty solution is the increased use of olive oil within many foods as it is made of ‘good fats’ that are able to lower fat and cholesterol levels within our bodies.

With its benefits to health highlighted above it is clear that a move away from traditional cooking items such as margarine, lard and butter towards olive based spreads makes a lot of sense. It is sensible in that olive oil not only has proven health benefits but it has the potential to increase quality of life and subsequently extend that life for a few more years.

Typically associated with Greece it has been medically proved that Greeks are living longer than many other countries and this is attributed in part to the monosaturated ‘good fat’ that makes up some of Olive Oil.
