The Most Effective Ways To Find A Lost Cat

Cats have a tendency to wander away from home. This is especially true of male cats, but there are female cats who will enjoy exploring the great outdoors now and again. If your cat is missing, a sense of fear and panic can set in. Don't become immediately discouraged. Instead take a proactive stance for getting your cat safely back home.

If your lost cat has been inserted with a microchip, report that s/he is missing right away. This will give you peace of mind knowing that, should any shelters or other organizations with microchip scanners get a hold of your cat, they will know they are missing via the microchip registry system.

Next, begin searching the area around your home. Typically, cats will be much less willing to come out of hiding than dogs. For this reason, it is probably not a good idea to get a large search party involved that may drive your cat further into hiding. Instead, alert your neighbors to the fact that your cat is missing, but tell them to give you a call if they spot your lost cat instead of trying to capture the cat themselves. On the other hand, if your cat is friendly, ask your neighbors to keep them in a safe place until you can pick them up. This will ensure that they don't take off again.

Cats will often come to the sound of their favorite treat can or bag being shook. To prepare for this event in the future, always shake their treats before handing them out even when inside the house. If your cat is used to receiving wet food, bring an unopened can outside where you will then open it. The familiar sound that they associate with mealtime may lure them to you.

If you have recently moved, be sure to check back at your old home for your lost cat. Cats will often return to familiar places. Many owners are surprised to find that their cats have traveled tremendous distances.

Cats have been known to wander for several weeks or months before their owners find them. While many come back within days, do not lose hope if you still haven't found your cat after some time. When your lost cat does eventually return, consider taking extra precautions, like having a microchip implanted, if you haven't already. You will then have a network of humane societies and other agencies that have scanners prepared to identify your cat.
