The Mystery Subject Of Human Nature

Sometimes I think about what makes us all tick. See, we have celebrity dog trainers, horse whispers and environmental nature shows in abundance, but shows about human nature and the meaning of life aren’t often aired. It makes me wonder, how can we know so much about the world around us but miss the elephant in the room? Humans, people, community, mankind, we can be described a million ways but not many people can talk about human nature.

Some might argue that we have personality types, or types of people, but when it comes to describing why humans behave it gets very messy.
The meaning to life has been examined by humans for hundreds of years; great philosophers have pondered what the meaning in life is. But when it comes to explaining the human condition or human nature it can get confusing. Sure we have religion to guide us on a spiritual path, and laws to protect human rights, but why do we need these anyway? Why are we different to other animal species? One could speculate that humans have a fully conscious brain, and that this separates us from our fellow animal cousins. No other animal has built spaceships that allow them to travel to the moon, or designed submarines that submerge into the deepest ocean caves. We are a pretty impressive race. Having a fully conscious brain has meant that humans have achieved incredible things, and learnt so much from our environment. Then again, we have also been responsible for horrific crimes, wars and inflicting pain on ourselves and each other.

So I guess my question is-what is it about ourselves that scares us from looking at who we truly are? Are we essentially good or bad? And to what degree? In school we are taught skills to equip us with navigating the world, some relevant and handy, many that aren’t. Wouldn’t it be wise to have a subject on Human Nature, understanding what human nature is and what about consciousness?! Could it be that we have not studied this enough to have general consensus on what the answers are? When I went to school the closet subject that might have touched on these questions was the “study of religion”, but it often felt like once God was thrown into it things got a bit blurry.

God represents the good in us, but what about the other side to human nature, the good and the bad? Mother Teresa was an amazingly good woman, but what about the Bin Laden’s and Adolf Hitler’s with their crazy egocentric ways ruling over others? How does a little boy or girl start the world so innocently and be capable of inflicting so much pain onto the world? It must be so overwhelming for children to think about the evil in people and us adults being unable to examine the basics of human nature. I just hope to live and see the day when we will have someone who puts the pieces together in a way that unlocks the mystery of life, humans.

In searching around the world, and more recently the WWW, I've come across an Australian organisation called the World Transformation Movement. A book titled The Book of Real Answers to Everything, has some amazing essays on topics like what is the reason and purpose of our ego. I urge others to have a look too.
