The Need To Feel Your Feelings
Basically what we're talking about here is, in its mildest forms, simple neurosis. And it seems that just about the whole world has it. In stronger forms it can become severe paranoia, megalomania, even murderous rage. But it's the common afflictions that concern us here. Because if you are in tune to your emotions and experience resentment, you will become cognizant that it is not good at all and that you would rather be experiencing a pleasanter emotion. And that is the first step, but one must make a further leap, a leap into what for lack of a better term is a dual experience. There is probably little an individual can do to force a negative emotion to disappear and turn into a happy one. If we could just magically do that there would no need to write this. What you can do when experiencing a negative emotion though is, as said above, acknowledge it and note a preference not to be in that space. Then, let the emotion go on it's own. Don't try to eradicate it, alter it, and especially do not indulge it. Become the you that is angry and the you that watches the anger. You can ask yourself why you are angry for example, but just let the emotion be. Feel the feeling. Admit that you are not perfect and not happy all of the time. You are human. What we often do in our minds is juxtapose an antagonist to the negative emotion, thereby making it stronger. But if we focus exclusively on the emotion and not the antagonist, we will starve the emotion and a calmer emotional state will gradually take its place.
