The New Cateye El320 Compact Front Bike Light

New compact LED front bike lights are giving you even more candlepower than ever before for illuminating dark streets and dull bike trails. These incredible front lights are really quite stylish looking and strong. I personally like the Cateye EL320. Though there are definitely brighter lights available it certainly does the job.

Some of them have such a strong output that it seems like they turn night into day. Others have only 1000+ candlepower yet in comparison to only a few years ago that is extremely good. Even with the powerful light beam they produce their run times are incredible with up to 60 hrs of operation on the constant beam setting. And even more impressive you can get up to 120 hrs with it on flashing mode with just one set of new batteries.

Flashing mode is very useful in cities with all the traffic where you are more interested in the cars seeing you than you being able to see where you’re going. The flashing beam attracts attention giving you great visibility among the city lights. But you can also use them in constant mode on unlit roads at night to be able to see where you’re going.

Some lights are made as a compromise of sorts. They give those looking to be law abiding a light that makes them legal and gives them enough light to be visible and therefore safe. Though they may give you a reasonably safe ride on trails they were never meant to light up a night trail like daylight. If that is what you are looking for then there is a whole different line of lights you should be looking at. However I have used several relatively inexpensive bike headlights on various terrains, and found many of them to have great balance between a bright central light beam to see with, yet it provides good visibility among all the traffic.

These lights are meant for use as an everyday light for your bike. For people to use on their way to school or work yet one that could be used if you wanted to takes some trails on a casual bases.

Installation is usually quite easy. Though some of them seem to move around on your handle bars because they don’t seem to tighten tight enough to stay in place. Almost all of them easily disconnect from the holding bracket so you can take them inside with you when you get home or when you want to slip into a store briefly to buy something.

Some of them have unique switches to keep them from accidentally getting turned on when they are being carried in a back pack or pocket or whatever.

My recommendation is. Find a reputable bike shop, consult with their sales staff and talk to them about what kind of riding you might be doing. I am sure they will have some choices that will meet your needs.
My personal recommendation for an everyday urban riding headlight would be the CatEye el-320 which is affordably priced and just waiting for you to discover.
