The New Election Year Hot Button

As the health care crisis continues to be a point of contention in the United States, many people from many walks of life who depend on Medicare are worried about its future prospects. Depending on the lean of the country and its leaders after the next election, Medicare will undoubtedly undergo some major changes either in favor of its continuance or its slow death.

While many experts debate the future of Medicare, what is certain is that under its current conditions, it will not survive. The program has much more money going out than it has coming in currently, and is set for bankruptcy in the year 2052 under current conditions, by some estimates.

It has been a long time since the flames of debate have divided a political issue such as the medical insurance issue that will surely witness its fair share of debates leading up to the 2012 elections and will have significant influence of the future of Medicare. Politicians on the left favor increased funding for Medicare, but the conservative side of politics think that continue funding is a bad investment of resources and favor private businesses that offer medical insurance programs instead but would need the backing of the public health care system.

Both sides of the issues have lobbies that are making their presence known and both of these sides contribute large resources to politicians and their campaign engine who they see as champions for their cause. Private businesses still oppose the current tax structure as being the main collection plate and paying the large Medicare benefits and are incumbent Senator's biggest supporters. The rhetoric surrounding socialized medicine similar to Canada and other developed nations is beginning to loose a footing with centrist Democrats and they see the necessity to get the support of Republicans and work towards creating jobs and other current economic concerns.

The current circumstances that would drive the future of Medicare does have a generational divide. Young business owners are in favor of the demise of Medicare, due mostly to a generous amount of expendable income as well as having good health that doesn't need the attention of Medicare. The older near or already retired generation is standing upon different circumstances like less expendable income and aging bodies that bring numerous health issues that need the assistance of Medicare. Both of these age examples are considered more likely to seek out liberal politicians to support their cause. After the elections, a swing will definitely take place and the White House will most likely play referee a divided Congress. The current left wing White House Administration has indirectly let their opinion be known without blatantly spelling it out, but is smart enough to do little about upsetting the apple cart, because political careers have been started and ended with such hot issues in election years.
