The Omega Co-axial Escapement: A Masterpiece From A Master Watchmaker
An escapement is the ticking heart of every analog watch, and the basic construction of these pieces has remained unmodified for more than two centuries. This year, Omega Watches blows past the competition with a completely innovative, brand-new design called the Co-Axial escapement that was designed from scratch. Instead of relying on centuries and decades old winding mechanisms and escapements, the unique low-friction system opens up brand new possibilities. This novel design is based on the concept of a double co-axial escape wheel, a lever with three pallet stones, and an impulse stone situated on the balance roller, and a free sprung-balance. It reduces the friction produced by sliding much better than a traditional lever escapement does, and therefore ensures more precise accuracy over long periods of time, when other watches might slow due to friction. It is also much less prone to effects caused by shock-deformation, and is therefore much more able to stably regulate. Creating the Co-Axial Escapement, however, is no mean feat, and requires astronomical technical expertise and authoritative knowledge of the art and science of time-piece creation. Implementing the new system requires a level of finesse so far unmatched by any other watch company, ones has to manufacture and decorate a piece that oscillates precisely 220,752,000 times every year without weighing it down, creating extra resistance, or otherwise compromising its integral accuracy and longevity. The Co-Axial Escapement, when combined with the free sprung-balance, makes the new Omega calibres unrivaled in the watch world, unique and forward thinking piece of modern technology. Designed to sustain affection for the analog watch into the 21st century- it represents the culmination of over two decades of development and research. And who is responsible for this amazing leap in analog watch technology? Professional horologist Dr. George Daniels, with his fifty years of watchmaking experience, has lived through more milestones in timepiece history than almost anyone. He was a Master of the Clockmaker's Guild in London, and is an ex President of the Horological Institute. He has won the Gold Medal of Clockmakers' Company award, which was originally established in 1631, joining a long lineage of highly esteemed watchmakers, and he also was awarded the Gold Medal of City of London Guild and the Kullberg Medal of the Stockholm Watchmakers' Guild. He is the one who, during more than twenty long years, painstakingly designed, tested, tweaked, and developed the co-axial escapement.
