The Origin Of Conservatories

When you look up the meaning and check where conservatory was actually derived, you would be able to see that it takes its roots on the combination of the words ‘conservato’, an Italian word for something that is maintained or something that has to be stored, and from ‘ory’, a Latin word which means place. When we take the meaning of conservatories with regard to buildings, this would now mean that it is a part of a building that is extended and its area under the roof is about 75%. Before, when these additional parts were made, it served as a food storage area and was not completely finished.

In line with this, conservatories may be associated with the attempts of the Italian with regard to building structures which allow light to go through the inner spaces but would still protect the people from strong winds. In the olden days, the structures of a conservatory were built in stone, however this eventually changed to the use of mica sheets, in order to improve these buildings. For those who were part of the higher social class, a conservatory was only some sort of a trend in order to keep up with the other elite. This basically served as an area where they keep the plants as well as other equipments that they use. It was an essential part of the buildings or homes because this place allowed them to conserve the plants that they got from different countries which could possibly be similar to a greenhouse.
