The Parable Of The Seoer

Once upon a time a webmaster wrote a bunch of articles to promote his new site, and then submitted them to all the article directories he knew of in the hope of gaining traffic and backlinks to boost his site's search engine rankings.

But some of the articles were too short, or excessively self-promotional, or of poor quality, or otherwise inadvertently violated the directories' terms and conditions, and as a result they were rejected. The SEOer was disappointed because it seemed like his work had been in vain.

Some other articles were accepted into the directories but had poor titles, and were in niches that no-one was interested in, and so they did not get widely republished. The SEOer was downhearted because still his site was not showing up in the search results.

Still other articles were picked up by low quality black hat sites who stripped out the SEOer's links, and used the articles without proper attribution. The SEOer managed to get some of the illegal copies taken down, and the search engines de-indexed the other copies due to the spam sites' poor reputation. The SEOer was frustrated at his lack of progress, and disappointed at the behaviour of those unethical webmasters.

But some articles were republished by reputable sites with actual PageRank, who honoured the SEOer's wishes by keeping his links intact and not even attempting to make them nofollow. The search engine bots soon found these new pages and conferred some authority to the SEOer's link targets so that his pages rose in the search rankings. Gradually his website began to show up on the front page of search results, bringing visitors to his site who clicked on his advertisements and bought his affiliate products. And finally the SEOer was happy that all his hard work had paid off.
