The Practice Of Leadership Accountability
Leadership coaching is a large market in today's world because for a long time it was thought that it could not be taught. It was conventional thought that you were either born with leadership qualities or you were not. Now it is known that it can be taught just as you would learn a new language. Too often, employees do not know the right line of reporting and communication lines. When that happens, they tend to talk to each other about their grievances, their complaints and even the suggestions that could have been helpful to the organization. If you are senior manager or leader in your organization, or even if you are a middle or junior manager, make necessary steps to ensure that your subordinates are accountable to you. Likewise, you should be accountable to your superiors as well as to your subordinates. Great leaders reject this concept totally. They know that each individual is true to their unique nature and they recognize that different people are motivated differently. Each person has an individual style of relating to other people, building rapport, their own way of thinking and their own strengths and weaknesses. Some leaders are so overwhelmed by the complexity of these questions that they avoid the situation. They shuffle the non-performer sideways where they can do less harm or they employ someone extra to compensate for the problem. Regrettably, this is a damaging approach and inevitably the business will suffer. Stand for Something. A leader makes his or her choices obvious to those around them. That is, the leader stands for something. The old saying is that if you don't stand for something, you fall for anything. By standing for choices with a solid foundation, a leader demonstrates how to maintain standards and how to come to a good decision.
