History is a fascinating topic for many. And it's amazing how fast it can disappear when it's not preserved. I remember loving Lon Chaney as a child. It was the way he acted and his mastery of make-up that fascinated me. He was really ahead of his time. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see his great films like The Hunchback of Notre Dame, because then, it wasn't profitable to air movies on public television channels.

The internet, since its mainstream adoption in the early 90s has revolutionized our historical view. We can now access many classics, including silent film productions from the comfort of our homes. And not only can we watch, but we can download as well. Thanks to the internet, I now have copies of both of my favourite Lon Chaney films, and feel fortunate that I live in a time that makes it so easy.

It might be thought of as an entertainment site to many, but if you think about it, it's also a method of preserving history in film form.

And the great thing is that information about virtually every film ever made has been gathered and is displayed here.

The internet also allows us to look up history in other ways. Take online newspapers, for example. You can look up almost any publication from any year and get a pretty cool snapshot of the way things used to be. Exploring history in this way is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon, and it can also result in a lot of laughs as you read the advertising language!
It can be easier to understand history when you can immerse yourself in it through film and print. And the internet makes that easy and entertaining to do.
