The Process Of Deep Fried Turkey

I don't know about you, but for all my life I had no idea that people deep fried turkeys. I remember the first time a friend invited me over for Thanksgiving, they told me they were going to deep fry the bird. I actually laughed thinking that it was a joke because I always ate turkey that was baked in an oven. Well, he wasn't joking. As I'm sure most of you thought, images of what this would be like popped into your head. The first thing I thought of was a crispy bird. I also thought it would be very greasy, which isn't a characteristic I wanted for a Thanksgiving turkey. I was surprised when I had my first piece because the meat was tender, moist and delicious.

When it comes to the actual process of cooking this turkey you're going to have to do this outside. This comes down to a safety factor. This isn't an ordinary deep fryer that you're going to need because a turkey is big. You're going to need a big post, a lot of oil and some sort of heating tool like propane. For obvious reasons you don't want any of these things in your house for use because of the fact that you could easily burn down your house.

Essentially you just put the bird in a basket and lower it into the hot oil. You don't have to leave it in their long. The typical number is 3mins/pound, so a 15lb bird will take around 45 minutes for you to cook. That's extremely fast when you compare that to an oven.
