The Prosperity Hoppin’ Festival

As the days of summer wind down, the small town of Prosperity, South Carolina is the place to be for a fun-filled series of events on August 20 and 21. The 10th annual Prosperity Hoppin’ Festival combines old fashioned charm with lots of family friendly activities for a great weekend. The Prosperity community welcomes area residents and visitors to join their celebration. The festival’s frog theme refers to the community’s proud heritage. The earliest settlers called the area Frog Level. A popular legend claims that a local pond was infested with innumerable frogs. It comes as no surprise that a favorite food available at the Hoppin’ Festival is frog legs.

The two day festival will be held at the Prosperity Town Center. Activities begin on Friday night at 6pm and will include a street dance, rides, children’s activities, and a car show. The musical entertainment will be provided by the Good Times Band. In additional to the traditional frog legs, local restaurants will be offering other food choices. Pageant Queens, who will be crowned the week before on August 14, will be presented at the festival. The Hoppin’ Queens will range in age from baby to adult. The Friday evening activities and street party will continue until midnight.

The Saturday festival events will begin at 8am with a 5K Run/Walk. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place runners in each age group, but the walk is non-competitive and family friendly. Hoppin’ in the Square events will include a yard sale, street vendors, food, rides, and a free youth project table. Musical entertainment will begin at 10am at the gazebo on the square.

Prosperity is located just ten miles south of the city of Newberry with easy access to Lake Murray, one of South Carolina’s premier recreation areas. Lake Murray offers some of the best largemouth and striped bass fishing in the state. The popular Dreher Islands State Recreation Area is nearby. Prosperity’s town square and Main Street shops and restaurants give the town an old fashioned charm. The Hoppin’ Festival is an example of small town fun at its best. As the summer comes to a close, make time for one last weekend of good family fun.
