The Rise And Fall Of Ebay E-books

There was a time when selling eBay e-books was extremely popular. Users figured out that they could use these digital products to make money on eBay and they created a business model that was unlike any before.

Looking closer, it’s interesting to explore why it was so popular to use eBay e-books to make money on eBay and why this trend was halted by the website.

A Profitable Venture

Selling digital media is certainly a profitable measure, but it didn’t only apply to eBay e-books. Users were selling web domains and MP3s to make money on eBay. In most cases, the digital property rights belonged to the seller, but there were exceptions.

These exceptions contributed to the banning of using eBay e-books to make money on eBay. As is often the case, a small set of abusers ruined the chances for others to participate fairly.

Here are few of the reasons the website put an end to the practice:

Copyright Infringement

This is a big one. Whether dealing with eBay e-books or music files, the website cannot allow its users to make money on eBay by selling other people’s intellectual property. It’s not feasible to police individual cases, so eBay put an end to the entire practice.

Misleading Buyers

In an effort to maximize their ability to make money on eBay, some eBay e-books sellers would list their product in the wrong category or give their work an over-hyped title. This leads to customer dissatisfaction, which ultimately makes it harder for everyone to make money on eBay.

Dubious Motives

The fact is many sellers were using digital media as a guise to peddle feedback. There is really no way for users to make money on eBay without positive feedback ratings, so users would sell each other one cent eBay e-books which were actually empty files and then issue positive feedback to one another.

How to Sell Digital Media Today

All of the above factors led to the end of selling digital to make money on eBay, but there is still an alternative for users who have a legitimate piece of intellectual property they’d like to market. There are two major alternatives for people who still want to sell eBay e-books online:

Use a CD – It’s still legal to sell CDs online, so many merchants have started using this to transport their digital media. It’s not as satisfying as the old method, but it works.

Advertise on the site – Merchants can still advertise their eBay e-books on the website, they just can’t sell them at auction. Posting an ad in eBay’s classifieds isn’t free, so profit margins are tighter.

This change in policy was a shock to people who used digital media to make money on eBay, but it’s now accepted as the way the company operates. Problems are hard to anticipate, so they’re just patched as they appear. While this can be discouraging in the short run, it also keeps the eBay business model in perpetual motion, which means new opportunities are constantly arising.
