The Rising Concern Over Fish Stocks And How Alaska Is Making A Difference

According to newly released studies, the state of the world’s oceans looks pretty bleak. Even as doctors and nutritionists continue to vouch for the incredible health effects of incorporating and consuming more fish as part of our daily diet, the sad fact is that now there aren’t enough fish in the ocean to meet the demand. Years of over fishing and depletion have taken their toll. The future of fish stocks is far from rosy. The growing human population and the quickly diminishing stocks of naturally occurring fish is a problem, especially since the ocean is the major source of food for many of the world’s poor. According to studies, the ocean provides one billion of the world’s less fortunate with the sustenance they need and another 150 million people jobs. Soon, though, that resource will no longer be there. The Earth’s oceans are in danger.

Scientists are now looking at aquaculture, fish farms and managed fisheries to provide for the world’s population. Managed fisheries such as those in Alaska are becoming role models for the rest of the world. Alaska’s track record is immaculate. The state has thriving fisheries in no danger of depletion.
The reason for this is that Alaska has made a strong commitment to marine stewardship and sustainability. The Alaskan government has instated strict rules and regulations governing its fisheries, ensuring that the state’s natural resources will not be depleted.

Unlike many other fisheries whose practices degrade the environment and whose flagrant disregard for the future of fish stocks, have resulted in this crisis, Alaska’s fisheries pay special attention to conservation and habitat protection. There are designated protected marine areas where fishing is not allowed or only in certain numbers and using certain methods and equipment. All fisheries are overseen by scientists who work with fishing companies and the government to determine when and to what extent fishing and harvesting can take place. Furthermore, Alaska puts in place strict oversight measures, with traceability being well regulated. Perhaps, if the world follows Alaska’s lead, the oceans will have a chance. Although the future of fish stocks at this moment is bleak, there is hope yet.
